abstract = { Hierarchical interpolation techniques allow the efficient
representation of digital terrain data. Due to the inherent
adaptivity of these methods, less points are needed for the
storage of smooth areas compared to non--adaptive methods.
They also allow the derivation of approximate terrain
models with variable level of detail. This results in a
significant compression of the data as well as a highly
reduced computational cost of algorithms for terrain
		  analysis. },
